Hi: This is the website for Owen Carter, a British guy who has been living in Amsterdam for the last 11 years.
I'm afraid there is nothing earth-shattering here, no solutions for World Peace, no cures for peoples ills.. Just a few of my photos and ramblings.

November 11th, 2010 | Owen First post in a while, I’ve been ignoring the tech in order to devote some serious time to my boat, my fish, and myself.
Fedora14 shook me out of my reverie a bit; I have it running on my netbook PC and home desktop (parallel to Windows7, which I also like but think is overpriced compared to Fedora! )
Now I have to finally install the touchscreen I have been hoarding for the last 8 months into the netbook.. I’m curious how it will work. All this is in preparation for going the the UK next month for a RedHat training course.
August 25th, 2006 | Owen .. No updates.
I’ve been busy with my new Linux system, she’s nearly there now.

July 19th, 2006 | Owen This is probably just what I need to read..
February 13th, 2006 | Owen The new (v3) version of the GPL (the licence the Linux and a lot of other open source software is distributed under) is causing a lot of Ruckus. It’s been slightly hijacked by some extremeists to add a clause that it cannot be used with DRM schemes. Now I’d be happy to see DRM go away too, but it can only be done via educating consumers to reject it. [Sidenote: If you've been stung by a DVD that -forces- you to watch 10 minutes of adverts before the main showing (Disney!) you'll know what I mean. If they want to do that, fine, they should just have to state that -clearly and visibly- on the front of the DVD, right next to the price. Then the consumer can decide.] Anyway, the zealots are winning, GPLv3 will have the restriction, and so will go the way of the dodo. Linus Torvalds (Linus of Linux fame) is not going to adopt it for Linux, causing much hostility from the zealots.. Anyway, the Register has a nice piece that fits my feelings quite well, the choice quote from it being: “Blaming Linus for not carrying *your* banner in your personal fight for “freedom” is insane. Fight it yourself if you must, but don’t start dragging someone into it who just wants time to plug away at his OS.“
January 13th, 2006 | Owen A file called dxva_sig.txt suddenly appeared in my favorite video directory. It´s a zero length text file, WTF? . Fortunately Google provides an answer, nothing to get too fussed about. Just caused by me using recent (4.12 or so) ATI graphics drivers and playing .wmv files without having installed Windows Media Player 10. I upgraded to that a few days ago, and no more little files.. another bug squashed.
August 6th, 2003 | Owen Most disappointing, I just installed SUSE 8.1 on my server, it’s like using something designed by an Idiot Savant. Lots of -really- incredibly clever stuff. Interspersed with massive bugs and fundamental design errors. What Linux -really- needs is a usability nazi. Someone who simply says ‘no’ to the idiots.
